Poundstretchers gear up to move into Wick

PROGRESS continues to be made for the grand opening of Poundstretchers in Wick town centre at the end of the month.

Workers have been clearing out the former Haldanes supermarket in order to refit the store for a provisional end of October opening.

This week workers painted the red livery of the discount chain on to the faded green of the Haldanes colours.

The 14,205-sq-ft building in Macleay Lane is being rented from owners, The Co-operative.

The premises – which have also been home to Presto and Somerfield over the years – have been available to lease since around 20 staff lost their jobs when the Haldanes store shut suddenly last June.

Set up in the early 1980s as a discount store for everything from food and drink, homeware, seasonal, cleaning and household products, Poundstretchers now has over 400 stores nationwide but until now the closest to the far north were the Inverness and Elgin branches.

The firm has taken an increasing market share following the demise of Woolworths.
