The unenviable state of the roads in Caithness is well documented, with driving instructors, pedestrians, motorists and cyclists all complaining about the danger of potholes on many of our rural and urban roads.

Local councillors will be asked on Monday to approve the prioritised area roads capital programme for the Caithness area, with a total of £594,452 available.

There are 178 defective roads listed in Caithness and reports of many more besides.

Committee chairman and Lib Dem councillor for Thurso and Northwest Caithness Ron Gunn said the total spend needed for all the repairs in the county was £4.6 million.

A report going before the Caithness committee lists 178 repairs which are prioritised for the county – but there is money for just 13 of the most urgent.

The report admits: "The level of investment across Highland falls short of the budget requirements to maintain a steady state condition of the road network. Deterioration of the overall network will occur with a corresponding risk to the travelling public."
