Wick Sheriff Court heard Danya Mackay (21) was stopped by police while driving on the A836 at Castletown on November 6 last year.

Officers got a distinct smell of a drug and a blood sample was taken. It gave a positive result for cocaine-based benzoylecgonine, with a level of 60mg against a legal limit of 50mg.

Solicitor Sian Fish said the offence was “a one-off” and Mackay was “awfully upset” at finding herself in court.

She would have to deal with the consequences of her mistake, she added, as she appealed to Sheriff Neil Kinnear to keep disqualification to a minimum.

A licence was said to be essential for Mackay to carry out her postal deliveries.

The sheriff told Mackay that he took account of the likely loss of her job and said he would moderate the fine to £160.

Mackay, of Falconer Waters Court, Thurso, also received the mandatory minimum driving ban of a year.
