A MAN accused of being involved in a series of break-ins in Caithness and other parts of the Highlands offered to do a deal with the police, a jury heard today (Thursday).

Matthew Peters told officers he would give them his co-accused, John Hind, “on a plate” if no proceedings were taken against him.

He was said to have made the offer during an interview with Detective Sergeant Steve MacDonald and a colleague on December 11, 2007, at Leyland Police Station in Lancashire.

Hind (54), from Colne in Lancashire, and Peters (40), from Bournemouth, deny stealing £34,497.60 in cash and £10,508.97 in stock from post offices and commercial premises throughout the Highlands between July 27 and October 12, 2007.

They also pleaded not guilty to stealing a car and using it to assault Fort William police officer Andrew Cooper to the danger of his life.

The trial before Sheriff Andrew Berry will resume next week.
