DOG waste bins have been reported overflowing and creating a potential health hazard in Thurso.

Community activist Alexander Glasgow flagged the issue up to local Highland councillors last week but said the bins were "filling up fast" as soon as they were emptied.

"Bags were being left on the ground by already overflowing bins, causing a serious hygiene issue," Mr Glasgow said.

"I took some to another bin – a task I enjoyed almost as much as cleaning my own toilet."

Mr Glasgow and others have pointed to a dog waste bin at Victoria Walk as being especially bad.

"In these uncertain times, there is going to be a lot of changes to services. We all should do our part by taking any rubbish to our home bins," he said.

"I honestly think the council should consider removing dog poo bins, as other areas are doing. Across large parts of landward there aren't bins."

He pointed out how efforts appear to have been made by the council to alleviate the issue by "posting notices on regular bins stating poo can be disposed of there".

Thurso and Northwest Caithness councillor Donnie Mackay had also noticed the issue and said there were issues with staff shortages at the moment.
