A FORMER police area inspector for Caithness has issued a warning about opportunistic crime in the run-up to Christmas.

Following a report of an alleged dishonesty crime in Shetland, Northern Constabulary is reminding householders across the force about some simple steps that can be taken to prevent any further incidents.

Chief Inspector Angus MacInnes said: “In the run-up to Christmas people will have high-value items in their homes and may well have additional cash in their possession as they prepare to buy presents.

“They should be mindful of the need to ensure that these items are out of sight and hidden from view.”

The inspector said that money especially should be put in a lockable container, reducing the temptation for thieves.

He added: “Cold-callers and workmen should be properly vetted before being allowed into your property and should never be left alone to carry out work.”
