A serving Scottish police officer has been accused of an assault in Caithness.

Constable Derek McNeill pleaded not guilty to the charge. He is alleged to have committed the offence in the execution of his duty, in Thurso, on December 17, last year.

McNeill was not present at Wick Sheriff Court on Wednesday but tendered his plea through a solicitor.

The 60-year-old is alleged to have punched Jordan MacGregor in the face to his injury at the junction of Princes Street and Olrig Street, Thurso.

McNeill will stand trial on November 14.

His address was given as c/o Police Investigations and Review Commissioner, Hamilton, which investigates incidents involving the police.
