Concerned police got an unexpected response when they called on Kalunga Chisaka's home in Thurso.

She activated a hairspray and lit the jet, the sheriff at Wick was told on Wednesday.

Chisaka directed the flame at Constable Scott MacColl, while laughing.

However, the court heard that Chisaka had health issues and she was given a chance by Sheriff Mark Lindsay to behave and continue to accept help.

She admitted having behaved in a threatening or abusive manner.

Fiscal David Barclay said that the police called at Chisaka's home in Smith Place, Thurso, on January 19, last year, following concern about her welfare.

She resented the police presence and as they were forcing their way in, she ignited the large can of hairspray and then threw it in the direction of Constable Scott McColl.

Officers were able to gain entry and in light of Chisaka's demeanor and concern for her welfare, they decided to take her to hospital.

Mr Barclay said that officers took the view that Chisaka was someone who was having serious issues in her life and who required assistance, not punishment.

Sheriff Lindsay referred to a background report indicating there were reasons for Chisaka's behaviour and that she was engaging with the medical services on a voluntary basis.

The sheriff described the accused actions as "unfortunate" and deferred sentence on her for six months.

He told Chisaka that if she continued to take the help then he might admonish her. However, if she didn't co-operate fully, then the court would have to review the sentencing options and impose certain orders upon her.
