Onlookers were so alarmed about the way a man was treating the dog he was walking that they contacted the police.

It resulted in Iain Campbell (41) appearing at Wick Sheriff Court this week and being fined £350.

Sheriff Neil Wilson heard that the incident occurred on August 5, last year, at Riverside, Wick, popular with walkers.

Some of them witnessed Campbell shouting at the puppy named Skye, striking it with a dog toy or similar item and pinning it to the ground.

Campbell, of Henrietta Street, Wick, admitted having acted in a threatening or abusive manner.

Fiscal Depute Grant McLennan said that other walkers were "sufficiently concerned" by Campbell's behaviour that they contacted the police.

Officers were concerned for the dog's welfare and had visited Campbell's home. He co-operated fully with them.

Solicitor Fiona MacDonald said that the accused, a kitchen worker, was “embarrassed” at finding himself in court.

He had been walking the puppy for a friend and had returned it to him afterwards.

Sheriff Wilson said he would treat the incident as "a one-off".
