New funding from the Scottish Government will allow replacement play equipment to be installed in Wick's Grizzly Park.

The facility at Wellington Avenue includes a skateboard area, but other equipment – including swings and a climbing frame – was removed some time ago after being declared unsafe.

In 2020, Highland Council said fencing and other items were "repeatedly being vandalised".

A Highland Council spokesperson said this week: “Councillors in Wick and East Caithness have identified Grizzly Park, Wick, as the place for investment with new Scottish Government funding which has been detailed to members that is available to spend in areas in the Highlands.

"The council’s amenities team is currently gathering information and specifications for new equipment for Grizzly Park with a view to creating a playpark for all age groups. Officers will be meeting with councillors after the recess to let them know of the proposals for new equipment at the park.”

Highland Council leader Raymond Bremner, speaking at the July meeting of the Royal Burgh of Wick Community Council, said: "The equipment won't be like-for-like with the stuff that came out of the Grizzly Park, but hopefully we will make it a place of fun for kids."

Community councillor David Dunnett added: "A lot of kids use it, and that's all they've got up there."
