A group of Thurso community councillors has been "working tirelessly" on plans to tidy-up the town centre and make it more attractive to locals and visitors.

Louise Smith, a member of the Thurso Town Centre Initiative 2024, explained that the proposals include weeding the area, replanting empty planters and installing large-scale photographs in empty shop windows.

She said: "Recently the sub-group acquired computer generated images of what the windows could look like, courtesy of a project supporter, showing local attractions and historic images, which has done a great deal to encourage us.

"We also have had support from building owners who have been supplying letters confirming their permission for the photographs being placed in the windows which should satisfy potential funders that the project is achievable."

Community councillor and sub-group member Corinne Nicklin said: "Local building owners have been very receptive about the project to put photographs in shop windows. We are keen to hear from any other landlords, tenants or owners that also want to take part."

Ms Smith hopes local people will get involved in the Big Help Out weekend – a nationwide volunteering event – which takes place from Friday, June 7, to Sunday, June 9, and help weed and tidy up the town centre to make it look more attractive.

The group also has plans to extend its project to other parts of the town.

"We think the beach and the Mall are huge assets that will attract visitors. At the esplanade, we are planning to refresh the area, with a donation of planters from Wolfburn distillery and a local gentleman who handmade them.

"We have also launched a competition – open until April 12 – for photographs of historic Thurso, key visitor sites in the area such as Old St Peter’s and Shore Street, and further afield to Camster Cairns. We are actively seeking funding for the photo project. The competition is open to all and entries can be submitted to thursocc2024@outlook.com," said Ms Smith.

She added: "If anyone is interested in helping out please come along to hear more or sign up at 6.30pm on Tuesday, April 23, ahead of the next Thurso Community Council meeting at 7pm in the Pentland Hotel.”
