The Northern Pilgrims’ Way Group (NPWG) discussed its latest project at a special Open Day event in the Halkirk Heritage and Vintage Motor Centre last Saturday (November 26).

The NPWG used the centre's library to display information about the project – reconstructing the Skinnet and Ulbster Stones and placing them as close as is practical to their original settings.

The display concentrated on the Skinnet Stone and Jane Coll, NPWG secretary and founder member of the group, was at hand to discuss the project with visitors at the event. The group already has permission to use a corner of the Morrison Park for the stone.

Jane said: "So the main purpose of the consultation was to gather suggestions for landscaping around the stone.

"Over 60 people attended the Open Day and there was considerable interest in the group’s project. By the end of the afternoon, the group was able to decide on most of the features needed in order to instruct a landscape gardener. There is an ongoing debate about how to avoid grassy areas that would need regular maintenance. Hopefully, the experts will suggest a solution."

The event also allowed the NPWG to publicly thank its first two sponsors. The Ulbster Arms Hotel donated £200 to get the ball rolling and Norbloc Construction is preparing the foundations for the stone free of charge.
