Ninety-eight trophies are being contested at this year’s Caithness Music Festival and organisers say they are pleased to see the silverware being well spread out across the county so far.

The long-established annual event got under way on Monday at the Assembly Rooms in Wick.

Festival secretary Audrey MacKinnon said: “It has been going very well. We’ve had big groups and classes so the hall has been pretty full, and has had to be emptied and refilled.

“Unfortunately because of that it means we don’t have as many seats for parents, but we’ve been able to get people in to watch their own classes and then maybe leave so we can get other people in.

“The winners are from all over, it’s not the same schools all the time that are getting trophies. That makes it nice as well, and the adjudicators are absolutely delighted with the standard.

“We had a shared trophy for one of the groups – that doesn’t normally happen. They both got 87 marks.”

One trophy, the Flo Dixie Cup for school choirs, P1-3, is a century old this year. It will be competed for on Friday.

Mrs MacKinnon is in her 50th year of involvement in the festival. She has been on committee for 38 years, most of that time as secretary.

She said: “I love the whole atmosphere of the festival, especially in the mornings when you’ve got all the children and they’re all dressed up and they’re so excited. It’s lovely.”
