Amateur photographers in the far north are preparing to open an exhibition of their work in Thurso later this week.

Members of the town’s camera club will showcase their work at the Swanson Gallery, in the library, from Friday.

It follows a season which has seen the artists challenged and inspired in equal measure.

The first visit for the members was to the Halkirk Heritage and Vintage Motor Centre, when the photographers used the interesting exhibits representing the social history of the community as their subjects.

They later visited the Wick Heritage Centre where they were given a presentation that included a fascinating insight into the historic Johnston collection of photographs on display there.

Perhaps the most dramatic experience, though, was to photograph Wick Airport Fire Service in action during a practice drill. Members were given close access to picture the action from different vantage points, thanks to the service manager who approved the site visit.

Club member Richard Griffith came up with the idea for the visit, which was very different form previous outings to photograph wildlife or scenery and other places or events of local interest.

It gave the members the opportunity to try out photography in more challenging conditions - the intense light of the fire with the dark background and the reflected light on the firefighters.

The exhibition, which has its opening night on Friday, March 29, runs until Friday, May 10.

The club encourages people to see the diverse range of images taken by club members. Anyone interested in photography can find out more by visiting the club’s website at www.thursocameraclub.co.uk
