Wick's Seaview House care home marked the King's coronation on Saturday with a royal tea party – and some of the residents were able to reflect on the crowning of Queen Elizabeth II almost 70 years before.

Staff and residents had been busy making coronation-themed decorations in preparation for the coronation weekend. Two large TVs had been set up in the main lounge, which had been suitably decorated, so that everyone could enjoy the occasion.

The residents had a continental-style breakfast on Saturday while watching the live coverage of the coronation ceremony. In the afternoon there was a party fit for a king, with home-made cakes and finger foods prepared by chef Maxi Newlands.

The celebrations continued on Sunday with a buffet in the style of a street party, with all the food again prepared by Maxi. Families were invited to attend if they wished.

On Sunday evening some of the residents watched the Coronation Concert at Windsor which was also broadcast live on TV.

Seaview House activities coordinator Mandy Wilson said: “We’ve all had a brilliant time celebrating the coronation, such a momentous occasion. It has been a real collaborative process – thinking about how we wanted to celebrate, planning our activities, decorating the home and creating all the party food.

“The team made it a fantastic weekend. The whole home came together to celebrate our new King and talk about the new era the country is entering."

Resident Cathie Anderson said: “I can just about remember the Queen’s coronation. I was very small but I remember it, and now I’m watching another.

"I doubt I will see another coronation in my lifetime as not many can say they have seen two.”

The home's oldest resident, Cathy Christian, who is 100, also took part in the celebrations.

Seaview House is run by Barchester Healthcare, one of the UK’s largest care providers.
