Movie-making talents of pupils have been celebrated in style - after their film creations hit the big screen and were then honoured with their own Oscars ceremony!

The red carpet was rolled out this week for a special Oscars ceremony to celebrate the creations of the talented youngsters at Miller Academy Primary School in Thurso.

The Thursday evening ceremony came after the 49 P7 pupils were split into seven groups to learn how to make movies using a Chromebook app called ‘Kinemaster’.

Each of their movies had to be a remake of one of their favourite films and the children were completely responsible for the props, characters, storyline, script, background etc.

The children had to work together to make decisions and to make their film with the one condition that it had to include a bear called Harper or Parker as a cameo role. Once they had finished their films, they went with their teachers up to the local cinema to watch the premiere of their films on the big screen, which they all loved.

This was then followed by the formal Oscars evening ceremony which was held in the school, for which the invites to parents and family members said ‘Dress to Impress’ and they all did that.

Head Teacher, Mrs Budge, said “It was a very special event and it was emotional listening to our children talk about their learning and what they enjoyed and also found hard.

“It was a project that involved such a wide variety of different learning such as digital skills, literacy and the expressive arts. An Oscar was awarded for ‘Best Storyline, Best Script, Best Editing, Best Backgrounds, Best Voices, Best Characters and Best Filming’.

“Their films were so clever and everyone enjoyed seeing their very funny ‘Bloopers’ clips of mistakes too.”
