There has been no let-up in the wintry conditions sweeping across the far north, with the Met Office issuing a new amber warning for snow from 3pm on Wednesday until 6pm on Thursday.
The warning covers many areas of the Highlands and Islands, including Caithness and Sutherland as well as the Northern Isles.
Schools across the area will remain closed today after further overnight snow. A list of weather-related school closures can be seen on the Highland Council website.
Traffic Scotland said conditions in the roads "remain tricky" and urged drivers to take care. ScotRail was hoping to run a normal service.
Gritters have been out in force in the far north, along with snow-clearing vehicles on many pavements.
The Met Office said there was a risk of power cuts in some areas, while some rural communities could become cut off. "Some delays and cancellations to rail and air travel are likely," it added.
The Wick area has experienced one of its heaviest snowfalls in years, and some youngsters with unscheduled days off school have been taking the opportunity to go sledging.
The snow is expected to clear by the weekend, with rain on Friday.
