PICTURES: Locals triumphant at Mey Highland Games and congratulated by King
King Charles III made his annual visit to the Mey Highland Games at John O’Groats yesterday (August 3) to the delight of many locals and visitors who attended.
The King attended in his role as chieftain of the games and was initially met with chair of the event, Andrew Sinclair, along with the convenor Henry Gunn.
Intermittent showers appeared throughout the day but when Charles emerged from the tent to greet the athletes and talk to members of the public the sun shone down brilliantly and the most torrential downpour only occurred at the very end of the event.
Local talent emerged triumphant as Emmerleigh (Emmy) Barter from Thurso was congratulated by the monarch for her wins as part of the women’s team. She had just signed up to the event “on a whim” a couple of days before it kicked off.
“I won my first heavy shot put and then went on to ‘weight for distance’ and had no clue what I was doing but managed to come in third,” said Emmy who went on to have wins in hammer, weight for height and joint first in caber toss.
The Caithness Rugby team also triumphed on the day and retained the tug o’ war title after defeating the Wounded Highlanders adaptive team.
