Pupils at Keiss Primary School took part in a "wave of hope" painting and writing session with visiting artist Lisa McDonald.

She showed groups of children from P5 to P7, and family members, how to paint a wave and they went on to create an inspirational message that could be shared.

It was the second of two workshops led by Lisa, of Haven House Art, outside Wick. The first was with P1 to P4 pupils and had a forest theme.

Lisa said: "It was lovely to take the younger children outside for a little inspiration-gathering session. We gathered leaves, twigs and plants to use as paintbrushes, which they then used inside to create a collaborative forest-inspired painting.”

Then it was the turn of the P5-P7 pupils.

“Each pupil and parent was taught how to paint a wave and then each group was guided to create an inspired message of hope that we could spread and share on social media," Lisa explained. "Each message is positive and set with the intention to spread a wave of hope across the country.

“I am thankful to Lyth Arts Centre for giving me further opportunity to work with children and families in the community of Caithness. It brings me much joy to not only share my skills with others but to also offer and promote the therapeutic benefits of being creative.”

Head teacher Fraser Thomson praised the efforts of Lisa, the pupils and family members who attended.

“The power of art and creativity can go a long way in developing pupils’ interests and skills in and out of school," he said. "Following on from Lisa’s work in Bower Primary School before the summer, this is another great example of empowering and strengthening our communities.

"The talent and innovation on display was quite something, coupled with the positive messages created by our pupils.”
