Users of a Wick daycare centre have combined their creative skills to produce a striking poppy-themed display ahead of this year's remembrance commemorations.

Silhouettes representing soldiers, along with a woman and a horse, feature in the Laurandy Centre's eye-catching design along with hundreds of hand-knitted red and purple poppies. Union flags and a model Spitfire complete the scene.

It follows on from a display in 2021 in which knitted poppies formed the words "Lest We Forget".

Centre manager Tracy Mackay said: "After the successful remembrance display last year at the Laurandy Centre, the ladies and gentlemen wanted to do something even more spectacular.

"After many discussions it was agreed that we would incorporate animals into the theme this year.

"Everyone wanted to be involved in the display, either with sewing, knitting or painting.

"Edith Mackay and the late Liz Christie were the driving force behind the knitting project at the start of the year, and in total all of the ladies have produced 388 poppies.

"The red poppies were used to create a dress for the lady and the purple poppies were knitted as a way of remembering the animals that lost their lives at war.

"Ian Sinclair and William Davidson took pride in painting the new silhouettes that were made specially for us.

"The ladies and gentlemen thoroughly enjoyed creating this stunning display. They took great pride in their work and felt strongly that the Laurandy Centre should do our bit to support the country in remembering those who gave their lives for us.

"The display has been placed outside the Laurandy Centre for everyone's enjoyment."

Miss Mackay added: "We would like to thank Rob Sutherland at the Wick wood yard and GMR Henderson for kindly donating the plywood."
