Pupils at a Wick primary school have been praised for their "thoughtful and caring attitude" after handing over cheques to four charities that help people who may be struggling over Christmas.
The Newton Park parent council arranged a bring-and-buy-sale within the school. Pupils had an opportunity to purchase items and parents were able to attend at the end of the school day.
Yvonne Graham, who runs the Newton Park uniform scheme, had items available for children and families to select free of charge.
A total of £440.88 was raised and pupil council members were given the task of selecting the charities to receive the money. Head teacher Laura Harper reported that the children were very mature in their discussions about which groups should benefit.
They selected Caithness Foodbank, the Caithness FM Toy Appeal, Highland Homeless Trust and Make-A-Wish. The overall amount was divided equally among the four organisations, so each received £110.22.
Mrs Harper said: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported this event – the families who donated lots of items for selling on the day, the parent council who do an amazing job supporting our school and running lots of events for our children, our pupil council who helped run the bring-and-buy sale on the day and the children who bought everything.
"The children wanted to donate the money to charities that could help people who might be struggling over the festive season. I was delighted that they showed such a thoughtful and caring attitude towards their community."
