The children at the Thurso school expressed interest in the effect different foods have on the body as well as exercise so class teachers Mrs Munro and Mrs Hossack planned a trip which involved visiting Thurso Tesco, Thurso Squash Club and Thurso Swimming Pool.
To ensure they had adequate funds for the trip, the children took part in a sponsored walk around the school’s newly installed "Well Being Path". Their aim was 24 miles for 2024 which they all managed with the support of other school children who frequently joined them on their walks.
Although the children raised more than enough money, Stagecoach kindly donated their use of a bus for the trip for free.
The class first went to Tesco where they met Mandy, the Tesco Community Champion, and were given a behind the scenes tour of the store.
The big deep freezer and bakery were most definitely a hit with the children – especially when they got to make their own doughnuts.
After some fruit tasting, the children then went shopping for some healthy snacks and got to work at the tills and scan their purchases.
It was then off to the Squash Club where club member Mairi gave a quick tour before putting the children through their paces on the court.
After lunch it was off to the pool before home time.
A school spokesperson said: "The class teachers cannot thank Mark Aitken and the lovely Stagecoach drivers enough for their very generous offer, Mandy and all the friendly Tesco staff for their warm welcome and patience, Mairi for giving up her time to teach us about squash and allowing us to enjoy our lunch inside the club house, Jordan and all the pool staff who were so accommodating and finally the wonderful parent helpers as, without them, the swimming part wouldn’t have been able to go ahead.
“It was such a fantastic day out and really lovely to give the children these experiences.
"We so appreciate all the support of all the adults involved, they helped make the day so memorable for our children.”
