The season of monthly craft fairs was launched this month in the Murkle Community Hall with a colourful collection of goodies for sale.

It brought together for another year, a variety of craftspeople from throughout Caithness and Sutherland. On sale was a great selection of items made by talented artists who were inspired to create using multiple mediums.

The fairs have run successfully for many years and help support the use of the community hall and provides an opportunity for locals and visitors from the wider community to meet up. The organiser, Janet Gray, said: “Over the years the craft fairs have become a very sociable event for the public as well as the stall holders.

"During the summer months tourists from all over the world have been delighted to find such a vibrant and welcoming event happening on the main route of the NC500."

The crafts on show were produced using wool, wood, glass, fabric, pottery, paint and many other materials. Also available was fresh locally made produce.

The regular event also offers the opportunity to local community groups and charities to help raise funds by providing the catering on the day. This month members of the Poltney Bell Ringers were busy in the kitchen serving up "delicious home baking and tasty lunchtime treats", said Lyn Ball from the group. Mrs Ball says they are fundraising to help towards the cost of attending The Handbell Ringers of Great Britain national rally being held in Stirling next month.

The craft fairs are held on the first Saturday of each month except in May and December when they are on the first Sunday to avoid clashing with the coronation of King Charles and many Christmas events.
