Around 2500 children will be taking part in this week's Caithness Music Festival, including many from north Sutherland.

The long-running annual event got under way on Tuesday at the Assembly Rooms in Wick, having had to be condensed into four days as schools had an in-service day on Monday.

Festival secretary Audrey MacKinnon said: "It's a friendly festival. We have pupils taking part from all the primary schools and three high schools this year – Wick High School, Thurso High School and Farr High School. We have pupils from Melvich and Bettyhill, so it is covering Caithness and north Sutherland.

"Throughout the whole week there should be about 2500 children taking part in all. We had 1000 on Tuesday, and that's why the hall is full every morning.

"It's a lot of children throughout the week with all the different groups and classes. It's a lot of children and a lot of organisation by the schools. We involve so many people."

Earlier, organisers had praised the behind-the-scenes helpers who make the festival possible.
