The volunteers responsible for Wick’s colourful array of flower tubs have been recognised for their efforts in a national competition.

Wick Flowers won an autumn/winter photo contest run by Amberol, a Derbyshire-based family business that is a leading provider of self-watering planters.

The group’s winning photo features Amberol’s barrel planters with seasonal floral displays alongside Wick harbour.

Wick Flowers came top in a public vote after six entries were put forward. The group’s prize is a £300 voucher that will go towards new containers.

Joanna Coghill, who is one of the Wick Flowers team, told members of the Royal Burgh of Wick Community Council about the award at their monthly meeting on Monday night. Mrs Coghill is the community council treasurer.

Speaking afterwards, she said the work of Wick Flowers is “very much a team effort”.

Mrs Coghill added: “We purchase the many plastic containers we have from Amberol. We had entered a few photos, but the one that won was the harbour picture showing half-barrels with the old salt cellars in the background.”

Amberol’s spring/summer photo competition runs until the end of September.
