A "peace candle" at a Wick church during Lent is giving local people a chance to pray and reflect on those affected by the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.

The candle was brought outside St John’s Episcopal Church on Saturday when the series began. Lent started this year on February 14 and runs until March 28.

A spokesman for the church in Moray Street said: "Each Saturday at 10am during Lent, in the grounds of St John’s Episcopal Church, there will be 10 minutes for people to pray and reflect on the two major wars – in Ukraine and in Gaza.

"Every day these wars are causing devastation, death, lifelong injuries, trauma and shortages. The focus for these brief times to pray is the needs of the ordinary people on all sides in these conflicts.

"St John’s has invited the other local church congregations to join them if they wish, and anyone else who wants to come along to take a few moments to pray and quietly reflect is welcome."
