THERE was an increase of 28 per cent in the number of passengers using Wick Airport last month.

Figures published by Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd show 2374 people flew to or from Wick Airport compared to 1846 for the corresponding month in 2010.

The increase also helped to boost the running total for the year so far which was 21,600 up from 19,937 – an increase of 8.3 per cent.

Aircraft movements at the Caithness airport were also up by 21.5 per cent in December.

A total of 996,635 passengers used HIAL’s 11 airports in the financial year to date compared to 909,520 for the same period the previous year – a rise of 9.6 per cent.

HIAL managing director Inglis Lyon attributed the favourable weather conditions for much of the improved position.

“December 2010 was exceptional in terms of winter weather conditions which saw cancellations and snow closures throughout the HIAL group,” he said.
