A newly announced partnership with engineering group Langfields will help JGC to "grow to the next level", according to the managing director of the Caithness-based firm.

The deal will see Salford-headquartered Langfields take up a majority equity share in the business while retaining the key skills of the JGC team.

Founded in 1972 by Jock Campbell, JGC is one of the UK’s leading engineering companies to the nuclear and renewable energy industries. It designs and manufactures specialist equipment for markets including nuclear, wind, wave and tidal energy.

Langfields group managing director Neil Yates said: “Langfields is undergoing significant growth driven by demand for new and clean energy sources. The partnership with JGC brings together two of the UK’s leading manufacturers of clean energy equipment under one umbrella.

"JGC has a strong reputation for quality among its 80-strong workforce, and we expect this will augment our own reputation as one of the UK’s largest equipment manufacturers in the new energy markets.”

JGC managing director Will Campbell welcomed the investment as a boost for the business’s growth ambitions.

“After five decades of family ownership we are certain Langfields will support JGC to grow to the next level, and provide a platform for our staff to develop," he said.

"We look forward to joining one of the fastest-growing engineering groups in the UK, and welcome the exciting opportunities in providing bespoke manufacturing and engineering services to the new energy future while continuing to provide high-quality services to our long-standing customers.”

Langfields specialises in the design and manufacture of pressure containment equipment. It has 450 staff.

Its background is in the nuclear and chemical sectors, and it is now growing to meet new demands including hydrogen, offshore renewables and waste-to-energy. In 2020 Langfields was at the forefront of building the world’s first Nuclear fusion reactor, the Tokamak ST40.

Langfields is owned by Inverness-based Envoy and Partners Ltd.

JGC has in recent years been led by a management team that includes long-term employees and three of the founder’s sons, operating from facilities at Janetstown and Harpsdale.
