A GROUP of concerned parents gathered with local children to protest about the "deteriorating state" of Green Road play park in Wick.

The Royal Burgh of Wick Community Council said it has been concerned about the deteriorating state of the town's play parks for some time.

Community council secretary John Bogle said: "Play parks are the responsibility of Highland Council but with their budget cutbacks and the council's wide review of play parks we thought that the only practical way forward would be for local people to take matters into their own hands and we therefore arranged a public meeting.

Mr Bogle said the community council was delighted at the number of people who turned out for the meeting and was impressed by their enthusiasm.

"As most people at the meeting were users of the Green Road play park it was decided to start with this one and see what could be achieved."

Children from Noss Primary School and parents gathered at the park on Friday "to show support for the initiative".

"We are now attempting to arrange a meeting with the responsible officers at Highland Council to agree what they will do and what the community will be permitted to do to enhance this play park which is badly in need of refurbishment," Mr Bogle added.
