AN international paper makers’ gathering in Caithness was a success, according to organiser Joanne Kaar.

The event, which was held at the artist’s studio in Dunnet recently, was staged as part of the celebrations to mark the 25th anniversary of the International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists.

Kaar floated the idea on the paper makers’ website and was surprised by the response.

“The people who attended thought it was great. Quite a few want to come back and one couple from Denmark hope to return to the North early next year,” she said.

The visitors stayed in Caithness for a week and enjoyed the experience of working with other people from different parts of the world.

A party of around 20 made the trip although that figure included some of the paper makers’ partners.

A report on the gathering appeared on BBC ALBA.

Among those who took part were Helen O’Connor, a hand paper maker and visual artist who lives in Whitehorse, Yukon, in Canada.

She was joined by Woo Bock Lee, a Korean living in Sweden, Young-Ja Bang-Cho, a Korean living in Germany, Brenda Parsons, of England, Elise Kloppers, of the Netherlands, Prue Dobinson, of England, Jenny Weissel, of Australia, Hannelieke van de Beek, of the Netherlands, Katri Schweitzer, of the Netherlands, Birte Helene Gairy, of Denmark, Ute Breitenberger, of Germany, Jan Marinos, of Tasmania, and Elke Buschman, from Germany.
