NEWS that Wick's Wetherspoon pub is no longer up for sale and will remain open has been welcomed by local councillor Willie Mackay.

The Caithness civic leader said: "I'm delighted to hear that Wetherspoon is to continue to operate in Wick. It is a focal point in the town centre and over recent years it has been very popular.

"Hopefully it will be onwards and upwards for Wetherspoon, especially when we are at the forefront of our Wick town centre regeneration."

The news was confirmed today by J D Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon. He said: “We can confirm that the Alexander Bain is no longer for sale. After consideration the company decided that the pub should remain open as a Wetherspoon.

“We look forward to the pub enjoying many more successful years. We are certain that the pub’s customers and staff are happy with the decision.”

The pub, named after the Watten inventor Alexander Bain, was initially put up for sale in March. However, the owners stressed at the time that the popular business – with a staff of around 30 – would remain open until a buyer could be found.

Councillor Mackay, who represents Wick and East Caithness on Highland Council, said the news that it will be business as usual for the Alexander Bain was particularly welcome with the work done on the deep clean of the town centre last week and he was looking forward to the next regeneration meeting on Monday, June 10, in Mackays Hotel at 7.30pm.

"We are keeping the pressure on with our plans to regenerate the town centre and want the people of Wick behind us," he said.

Highland councillors recently revealed ambitious plans to breathe new life into the town centre. They hope that wider stakeholders, community groups and the general public will come along to the next meeting to find out more as well as share ideas.
