RISING to the challenge of lockdown restrictions, Caithness artist Lisa Weller is now running online painting classes from her art studio above the cliffs of Papigoe.

"If it weren't for coronavirus I wouldn't have considered running art classes online," Lisa said.

"It has actually opened up a new market and I'm able to reach people all over the world via the internet."

Lisa holds weekly or twice weekly "paint-along" sessions where she guides participants through the process of creating a painting in acrylics step by step.

She not only has local participants who can no longer attend her art classes but people farther afield are joining in too.

"I have a lady in California who regularly takes part, and a windmill owner in Portugal.

"We have a great time because we can all hear each other and chat so it is bringing some much-needed social contact to each participant as we are isolating at home. Plus we are all united in the fact that we are creating something together."

Her students are encouraged to share their paintings afterwards in Lisa's social media group to see how they are all progressing.

"Each week the participants are growing in confidence as they learn more about different painting techniques," she said.

After lockdown is eased Lisa says she will definitely consider holding regular online classes as she recognises how they benefit people who live remotely and not able to travel so easily.

"I am grateful that technology has given us these opportunities," she said.

"It is lovely to be able to share the joy of creativity with others – albeit in a slightly different way."
