A STUDY which has examined Norse ancestry claims almost one in five people in Caithness are descended from Vikings.

According to researchers from BritainsDNA, Caithness has the third largest concentration of Viking descendents in the UK, with 17.5% of residents believed to have ancestors originally from Scandinavia.

Researchers compared the chromosomes of more than 3500 men in Britain with six DNA patterns rarely found outside Norway and Sweden.

In total 930,000 men from across the UK were said to be a match to the Vikings which invaded Britain between the 8th and 11th centuries.
