Old films and railway photos to feature in Doors Open Day at Wick museum
VINTAGE films and a display of old railway photos will be among the attractions as Wick Heritage Museum takes part in the national Doors Open Day programme this month.
The Wick Society, the voluntary group that runs the visitor attraction in the town’s Bank Row, participated for the first time in 2018 and will do so again on Sunday, September 29, from 10am to 5pm.
Entry is free for the day, part of an annual initiative that runs in Scotland throughout September, coordinated by the Scottish Civic Trust.
Ian Leith, chairman of the Wick Society, said: “Volunteers will be on hand to talk about the various artefacts and displays and indeed they will listen to what you can tell us about our heritage.
“Vintage films will run throughout the day, there will be a display of Johnston photographs with a railway theme, and you will be able – courtesy of the Wick Gala Committee – to enjoy a freshly made pancake or two.

“Everyone is welcome – it’s your heritage so come and enjoy it.”
Mr Leith added: “The Wick Society would also welcome new volunteers. If you have a couple of hours to offer we are looking for people who will meet and greet visitors to the museum or help in the museum garden, or who are interested in heritage photos or maintaining boats. Our oral history project, Wick Voices, is always on the lookout for voices to record.
“Come and chat to us on the 29th and find out more how we would welcome your time and skills.”
Volunteers will be on hand to talk about the various artefacts and displays.
A number of buildings across Caithness – both historic and modern – have taken part in Doors Open Day already this month, while still to come is a chance to tour John O’Groats Mill.
Normally the mill is closed to the public but the John O’Groats Mill Trust has been given permission to allow access this Saturday and Sunday (September 21 and 22), from 11am to 4pm.
It is almost certainly the last water-powered grain mill to be built in Scotland and passed down through many generations of the Houston family.
Doors Open Day events are free but some must be booked in advance and are subject to availability. For more information search here.
