Offers over £120,000 sought for former Altnabreac schoolhouse
The former schoolhouse at Altnabreac is on sale for offers over £120,000.
The “wonderfully remote” location has “stunning rural views”, according to the selling agents Bidwells. It is within the Flow Country World Heritage Site and is miles from any public roads.
The property, on two floors, closed as a schoolhouse in 1986 and has been used as a private home since.
Bidwells’ website says: “Originally the schoolhouse for the local area, the property now forms a fantastic rural home.
“Built of stone with a rendered brick extension under a slate roof, the property sits handsomely in the surrounding landscape.
“[It] is laid out over two floors and provides adaptable accommodation which is now requiring a degree of refurbishment.

“The ground floor extends to a family room, bathroom, kitchen, rear hall and the former schoolroom complete with WC.
“The former schoolroom is particularly adaptable and could be used as a living room, studio or a number of other uses as required. The first floor extends to two bedrooms with useful storage cupboards from the upper hall.
“Externally the schoolhouse sits in approximately 0.62 acres of grounds benefiting from a number of useful stores including the generator shed.”
The property is 23 miles from Thurso and a similar distance from Wick.

The nearby Altnabreac railway station, on the Far North line, reopened in April after an 18-month closure following an access dispute.
The Unesco designation was announced in July last year, with the Flow Country becoming the first Scottish site to be inscribed with World Heritage status purely for its natural criteria.
There are plans for a wind farm nearby. Altnabreac Wind Farm is proposed for a site south-east of the railway station.
If approved, there will be up to 17 wind turbines, each with a blade-tip height of up to 200 metres, and a battery storage system.
