THE Castle of Mey enjoyed another good tourist season with more than 28,000 people making a visit this year.

Managing director Shirley Farquhar said the total was slightly down on last year but was still good considering the historic attraction was shut to the public over Easter due to being used for a private wedding reception.

"The season went very well," she said.

"We were delighted with the Granary Lodge [luxury bed and breakfast] coming on board which has proved very successful with people from Britain and abroad."

Visitors saw a number of changes in the gardens, including two new arbours and fruit cages. The garden improvements were carried out alongside the Prince's Foundation, a big supporter of the Queen Elizabeth Castle of Mey Trust.

Ms Farquhar said: "The two new arbours are fantastic. We are looking to extend the season and to get more colour in the garden earlier. A lot of work has gone into it."

While the main visitor centre is closed for the season now, afternoon teas have been introduced in the Granary Lodge on Wednesdays, as well as Saturdays throughout the rest of November and into December.

A touch of sparkle will be added to the Christmas themed afternoon teas with a glass of prosecco on offer.
