Northern Constabulary launches crackdown on domestic abuse

A new initiative to tackle domestic abuse has been launched by Northern Constabulary.

A CAMPAIGN aimed at preventing and detecting domestic abuse has been launched in Caithness.

Part of Northern Constabulary’s enforcement initiative will be tasking officers to carry out targeted visits to previous offenders to advise them of the existence of the campaign and that a robust approach will be taken against any further offending behaviour.

In addition, warning letters will be issued to anyone taken into custody for a domestic abuse-related offence.

Superintendent John Chisholm said the campaign highlights the force’s ongoing commitment to tackling this issue.

"This is a crime that affects many regardless of age, gender or social standing," he said.

"Our approach is developed from previous national campaigns and we are implementing robust practices to deal with domestic abuse. We want the message to be clear to those committing such offences that this will not be tolerated within our communities."

He added: "We recognise that this is a sensitive crime that victims may by unwilling to report for a variety of reasons. I would like to encourage anyone to report domestic abuse to the police and reassure them that each incident will be investigated fully and in turn they will be provided with access to a range of support mechanisms."
