A RENOWNED international artist hopes to develop a new body of work after gaining a prestigious residency in Caithness.

Katya Izabel Filmus has been awarded one of only four places on an eight-week glass and metal casting residency at North Lands Creative Glass in Lybster.

The esteemed centre attracts some of the best glass makers from across the world to deliver short courses and features highly on the international glass art radar.

Commenting on her residency, the Israeli artist said she was hugely excited about the opportunity.

"It’s the first time that North Lands Creative Glass will have formed a joint residency with the Scottish Sculpture Workshop," she said. "The prospect of collaborating and exchanging ideas around metal casting is thrilling.

"I intend to develop a new body of work that will integrate the local community, and hope to continue exploring it and exhibit it in Sunderland on my return."

Katya already has a much celebrated portfolio of work, which includes an iconic crystal stag’s head sculpture, which crowns a new point-of-sale display gondola for Glenfiddich and is being reproduced for display at major international airports.

She also recently had a major work called Pain Killers purchased by Sunderland Museum for its collection.

She hopes that her work will inspire communities in Sunderland where she is at based the city’s museum.
