North chip shop the Trawler lands quality award

A NORTH chip shop has scooped a prestigious award.

The Trawler of Golspie recently became the 100th shop to take the Fish and Chip Quality Award and is the first to do so in Sutherland.

The National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), the trade body that represents the nation’s fish and chip shops, runs the scheme as a way of raising standards and enhancing the profile of the industry.

Shop owner Christie Gray is happy to receive the accolade.

“It has boosted staff moral considerably and we are using this to focus our business on perfecting our product,” he said. “Hopefully we are now able to profit through excellence.”

The scheme is a way of rewarding and promoting shops that provide good-quality products and high standards of hygiene, as well as friers who show a high level of competence.

To qualify, each shop has to go through an inspection by an NFFF approved assessor who looks at the shop’s presentation, hygiene and cleanliness, staff training, equipment, frying, sales skills and the quality of the cooked product.

Each quality award is valid for two years and retention is dependent on standards being maintained.
