A CAITHNESS firm has been awarded a million-pound contract as part of the regeneration project at John O’Groats.

Bower-based timber frame manufacturer Norscot Joinery Ltd has been given the contract by Natural Retreats which is carrying out work to redevelop the historic hotel and the surrounding land.

Norscot will be working with the firm to provide timber frames for the 23 apartments which will be built.

Technical director at Norscot Jason Fraser said that the company is delighted to be involved in a project that will benefit the Far North.

"As a local provider of energy-efficient timber-frame buildings, we’re very proud to be selected by Natural Retreats to help develop the site at John O’Groats.

"Working on a project as unique as this, helping to rejuvenate a historic landmark site and premium tourist destination, is an honour and a privilege".

Manufacture of the frames will begin next month with the delivery of the first frames to the site in January.

Natural Retreats chief executive officer Matt Spence said that the company is committed to working with local firms to complete the project.

"There were a number of national contractors we could have selected for this part of the project," he said. "However, we wanted to keep the work within the region and with a contractor who could meet our specification and schedule."
