Nineteen new Covid-19 infections recorded in NHS Highland area

NINETEEN new Covid-19 cases have been detected in NHS Highland – and Scotland has announced more than 1000 daily infections.
As well as recording 1054 new positive tests in the past day, hospitalisations in Scotland also continued to jump – with 319 people receiving hospital treatment yesterday for recently confirmed Covid-19.
That was up sharply from the 262 Covid patients in Scotland's hospitals the day before – and more than 100 higher than just 48 hours ago.
The number of people in intensive care also rose, from 25 to 28 in the past 24 hours.
And, sadly, one more person who tested positive has now died.
On a local level, the NHS Highland health board has now recorded 747 positive cases since the beginning of the pandemic – up from 728 just 24 hours earlier.
Elsewhere in the north, NHS Eileanan Siar added another three cases to its overall total, which stood at 53 when today's updated figures were published.
NHS Shetland and NHS Orkney recorded no fresh cases.
But NHS Grampian detected 34 further infections, to take its cumulative total to 2485.
And NHS Tayside's overall tally rose to 2716, after it detected 42 new infections since yesterday.
Scotland has now had 34,760 confirmed cases of Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.
The shock national rise in daily figures came shortly before First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced a number of new control measures aimed at slowing the spread of the disease.
