SEVEN further cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the Highlands, taking the region's total number of known cases to 144, new figures have shown.

Three hundred and eighteen people have tested positive across the whole of Scotland since yesterday, taking the national total above the 5000 mark to 5275.

And 495 people have died across the country since the outbreak began, a rise of 48 on the same point on Thursday.

In the Highlands, the number of people being treated in hospital with suspected or confirmed Covid-19 fell slightly for the second day running – down from 56 to 54.

But there was a rise in the number of people in intensive care, which stood at seven at midnight last night.

And more than 200 people were in intensive care across Scotland overnight.

Elsewhere in the north of Scotland, NHS Grampian recorded another 15 positive tests, for an overall tally of 251. Its hospitals were also treating 74 people in hospital for the disease, with 13 receiving treatment in intensive care.

Shetland and Orkney recorded no new further cases, while the Western Isles confirmed one further infection, taking its total number of infected people to six.

NHS Tayside has had 45 new cases of the virus since yesterday, taking its total to 712.
