A dozen cold-water swimmers celebrated New Year by getting together for a dip in the sea at Scrabster beach.

Despite the chilly conditions, they were all smiles as they waved and gave cheerful thumbs-up signs for the camera.

Regular swimmer Claire McGovern was among the group and she said there had been "quite a buzz" as they took the plunge.

“When there's a group of you, you seem to forget about the cold water – you're having a bit of fun," she said.

“There are so many people around and there's a lot going on, and they're taking photos, so it kind of distracts you from the cold.”

Claire has been a keen outdoor swimmer since trying it in May 2018. She lives in Castletown and usually goes for dips in her local area.

“I've had a month or two off, but usually I swim weekly to two-weekly," she explained. "In the summertime it's daily – it just varies.

“You do miss it when you're not there. A lot of people do it for their health. People who have issues with pain, they seem to think it does a lot for them – so that's good.

“More and more people seem to be doing it all the time and it's great to see. There's always someone new to bump into."
