BUS operator Stagecoach has unveiled an investment of more than £1.5 million in a fleet of new coaches in a major boost for public transport in Caithness.

The six new coaches will operate on the X99 service – now the fastest public transport link between Inverness and Caithness.

Each vehicle is fitted with a toilet, a special wheelchair lift for easy boarding and CCTV for passenger safety and security.

The latest boost for local transport follows a £250,000 investment in new low-floor buses last year, as well as other modernisation of the fleet.

Steve Walker, managing director of Stagecoach in the Highlands, said: "We are delighted to be making what is one of the biggest investments in public transport in the Highlands for many years.

"The recent improvements we have made to the bus network in Caithness and Easter Ross have delivered faster services, better connections, improved access and a more reliable travel option for local people.

"We are particularly pleased at the positive input we have had from the community and we have been able to incorporate many timetable and route suggestions into the new network.

"The latest investment in these state-of-the-art coaches is a real sign of confidence in the future of public transport in the region and we are committed to delivering high-quality bus services."
