Francesca Wilson had an open day event at the Blackstairs House dance studio in Wick where she displayed some of her skills in pole fitness and using aerial hoops.

The event at the studio on Dunbar Street included an early session for children and then an adults only demonstration after 6pm with fundraising games throughout to help towards the cost of new equipment.

"I was using Lyth village hall but have outgrown it and need a more permanent location," said Francesca who has been involved in this field of expertise for around 10 years.

"I felt Wick needed something. Thurso has a yoga studio and a couple of dance studios but Wick doesn't have anything like this I felt."

Francesca said she hunted around and knocked on a few doors until she came across the right space at the iconic Black Stairs location. She says it's an ideal site for people to easily access from across the town and sits above the scenic Black Stairs near Wick's harbour.

On her PoleFlexFitness website, the fitness guru says that she fell in love with the Highlands after holidaying in the area, from Kent, and eventually settled at Lyth. "Francesca wanted to create a safe space for women – and children – where they could escape from their daily lives and find their inner child again by having fun hanging upside down," says the opening statement on poleflexfitness.co.uk.

She wants women to celebrate their bodies for the "things they can do rather than what they look like" and wants to create a place where firm friendships are formed and confidence can skyrocket.

"We can do kids' birthday parties where they can do aerial hoops and add extras like birthday cakes. We can do hen parties as well and we have a contemporary dancer and a couple of trainee instructors."

Francesca is a firm believer of children being active and enjoying their activities all whilst building discipline, skills and confidence as they grow.

At the open day event was Sadie Custodio, a contemporary dance teacher from Thurso who can train children and adults, who is getting instructed by Francesca in the use of aerial hoop fitness.

Costs vary as there are different rates for the number of classes people wish to commit to. Spaces are quickly filling up for Francesca's classes and anyone interested in joining can visit her website or Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100088792982562

"We look forward to bringing a new community space to Wick," adds Francesca.
