RECENT news of business success is contributing to the optimistic outlook of the Far North economy.

Caithness Chamber of Commerce chief executive Trudy Morris said that the number of new shops opening in Thurso and Wick is encouraging.

Her views come after she announced that two town-centre development officers for Wick and Thurso have been appointed.

They are due to begin work next week with their aim to regenerate the centre of the county’s two towns.

She said that the current economic situation meant that businesses were still facing a tough time.

But the fact that new employment opportunities have opened up is to cause to cheer.

"There have been a number of empty shop premises in Wick which are now home to new businesses," she said. "Many engineering companies in the county have won new contracts and bakery firm Reid’s of Caithness has also signed a lucrative contract to supply goods to the Jamie Oliver JME brand.

"We are still committed to the town-centre regeneration project and the two new development officers will be speaking to local businesses in the next few weeks."
