More than a dozen new planters are being positioned around Thurso town centre as part of an environmentally friendly initiative.

Thurso Community Development Trust (TCDT) coordinated the placement of 13 large planters throughout the precinct – tying in with the organisation's ongoing commitment to encouraging local food production and promoting organic food for the community.

Other than Sir John’s Square, the town centre lacks any substantial green spaces. Along with fruit, vegetables and herbs, TCDT plans to grow flowers that attract pollinators, a vital factor in the continued health of green spaces in general.

The idea is that, when these planters flourish, members of the community will be able to help themselves to what has grown.

TCDT will be working with a core group of volunteers to plant and maintain them. There is a longer-term plan that the trust will seek to work with local businesses and community groups on a sponsorship system, with planters being sponsored individually.

Senior development officer Sharon Dismore said: “We love working with our volunteers, and we couldn’t be prouder of all the projects they do with us. A lot of our town centre volunteers have returned after the successful vegetable growing in the town square in 2020 and we are delighted to be working with them again.

"We’re always eager to welcome anyone new who wants to volunteer with us as well, so please do get in contact."

She added: "We are grateful to Gordon Meiklejohn and John Cunningham of Meiklejohn’s Garage in Barrock Street for their help in getting the planters in place around Thurso."

The planters were funded by the Highland Council Town Centre Fund.
