New convener for Green party’s North branch
COMMUNITY campaigner Fabio Villani has been elected to lead the Highlands and Islands branch of the Scottish Green Party.
Outgoing branch convener Myra Carus, from Rosemarkie, who led the branch for the last four years, said: "I am delighted that Fabio has been elected as Highlands and Islands Green Party convener. His energy and enthusiasm are an inspiration and I look forward to working with him."
Mr Villani, from Forres, said: "I will work hard to live up to Myra’s endorsement. I know Myra is going to be an incredibly hard act to follow, and I look forward to building on her achievements.
"One of my key priorities over the next few months will be to support activity throughout the region in preparation for the local authority elections in May 2012. We have a real chance of making a breakthrough next year by starting to get Green councillors elected.
"Only a Green voice in council chambers across the Highlands and Islands will ensure our local authorities start to take a serious interest in the issues that matter to people and ensure the region remains a great place to live, work and play, now and in the future."
