Nature Friendly Farming Network launches new crofting group for Sutherland and Caithness

A new group aimed at crofters in Sutherland and Caithness has been launched by the Nature Friendly Farming Network (NFFN).

Supported by the Scottish Crofting Federation it will feature peer-to-peer knowledge exchange and cover a broad range of topics pertinent to crofting, land use and the expected changes in policy support in relation to climate, nature and rural development.

The group will have several face-to-face visits to crofts across the counties as well as the option to have online webinars and catch-ups on a range of themes.

The group is facilitated by Skye crofter and NFFN Scotland vice chairman Phil Knott and runs from August until March.

"There are many changes in the pipeline for crofting and all forms of land management," he said.

"We need to ensure we are all resilient and prepared for the future.

"We have found peer-to-peer on-croft meetings on a range of pertinent topics one of the best ways to help crofters prepare and network, making a safe space for idea and knowledge sharing."

All crofters are welcome to apply from the counties, regardless of experience, croft size or current utilisation of the croft.

The exact topics covered will be decided by the group and will be taught from within the group and with external expertise if desired.

Topics may include species-rich grassland, integration and use of trees, managing for biodiversity, diversification, common grazings and peatlands amongst others.
