A BLOCK of city centre toilets are a step closer to being shut to save money.

Although several councillors questioned the move, members of the Inverness City Committee unanimously agreed this afternoon to recommend the closure of Castle Wynd toilets to the Highland Council’s transport, environmental and community services committee.

The closure could save more than £50,000 in annual running costs of the building, which has four men’s cubicles and three men's urinals and seven women’s cubicles, as well as areas for baby changing and facilities for disabled users.

Inverness Central councillor Janet Campbell raised concerns about how the reduced facilities might impact on the city’s reputation.

"Disposing of this building is tantamount to selling the family silver," she said.

Her anxieties were shared by councillors Bob Wynd, John Holden and Roddy Balfour.

"We have in general a lack of facilities in Inverness and we can’t afford to let this one go," said Councillor Balfour (Culloden and Ardersier).

Inverness South councillor Roy Pederson and Inverness Central councillor Bet McAllister supported the move along with the city's Provost Jimmy Gray.

"We have very difficult decisions to make when it comes to our budget," said the provost, who is chairman of the city commitee.

It is expected the toilets will be discussed by the transport, environmental and community committee on 22nd September.

Members agreed to retain the toilets at Mealmarket Close.
